The United Auto Workers union is floating the idea of pooling healthcare services for General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles USA to lower overall costs.
UAW President Dennis Williams tells reporters that combining coverage, including programs for salaried employees, should help the carmakers gain leverage. He estimates such a pool could cover as many as 155,000 salaried workers, 140,000 hourly workers and 607,000 people participating in the UAW's retiree healthcare trust.
The union will begin formal talks with the U.S. companies in July on a pact to replace the current three-year contract that will expire in September.
