The United Auto Workers union says an upcoming policy change by Volkswagen AG will clear the way for the UAW to represent workers at VW's factory in Chattanooga, Tenn., the Associated Press reports.
AP cites a letter from the union to plant workers. The message says VW committed last spring to recognize the union if the UAW agreed to help the plant win a new SUV program and also drop its challenge of an organizational vote it lost at the facility in February.
The contentious defeat prompted the UAW to set up a local near the plant anyway and invite Chattanooga plant workers to join on a voluntary basis. The union says it has attracted more than half of eligible workers.
VW wants to set up a works council at Chattanooga similar to ones it has elsewhere. But the company says it can do so only if an independent union represents the workers there.
