An arbitrator has ruled the Ford Motor Co. did not violate the "equality of sacrifice" clause in its contract with the United Auto Workers union when the company reinstated raises and 401(k) matching for its salaried employees.
The UAW made big concessions in 2009 to help the carmaker stay out of bankruptcy. When Ford restored the white-collar benefits in early 2010, the union cried foul. Nearly 35,000 members signed a mass grievance.
The arbitrator noted that no written equality-of-sacrifice agreement had been signed, which meant the provision applied only to sacrifices made in the year in which the contract was signed.
