The United Auto Workers union has canceled its current contract extension with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and could begin at one or more of FCA's U.S. plants as early as midnight on Oct. 7.
The union's four-year contract with FCA expired on Sept. 14. Last weekend the 40,000 UAW workers at the company rejected a tentative new contract by a two-thirds margin.
Analysts predict the union will target a strategic parts plant, such as FCA's transmission facility in Kokomo, Ind., to bolster its bargaining power. Observers doubt the UAW will launch a companywide walkout, which would be far more costly to the union's strike fund.
