President Donald Trump hints that he may might upend the tentative trade agreement with Mexico unless that country stops a caravan of migrants from entering the U.S.
In a series of tweets, Trump says illegal immigration is far more important to him than the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement worked out with Mexico and Canada three weeks ago. USMCA, which is intended to succeed the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, is going through a three-month ratification process with Congress.
Trump asks Mexico to stop what he describes as an “assault on our country at our southern border.” He refers to a growing caravan of people fleeing El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala that is heading for Mexico and the U.S.
The president threatens to withhold aid to Central America if governments there don’t curb the northern migration of their citizens. The immigrants say they are trying to escape violence and corruption in their own countries.
