President Donald Trump reiterates that he considers border security more important than trade but has backed off from his threat to completely shut down the Mexico border this week.
“I’m totally prepared to do it,” he warns. But he adds, “We’re going to see what happens over the next few days.” Last night he tweeted that he might close “large sections of the border, maybe not all of it.”
Trump has demanded that Mexico take steps to stop refugees from Central and South America from passing through on their way to the U.S. He indicates the country is taking steps to apprehend asylum seekers.
Meanwhile, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow says the Trump administration is considering ways to continue to allow freight to cross the border.
Analysts have estimated that the U.S. auto industry could shut down in less than two weeks if Trump cuts off the flow of goods between the two countries. “An assembly plant cannot build a partial vehicle,” notes Kristin Dziczek, vice president for industry, labor and economics at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.
