The Trump administration may confirm as soon as today that it will levy tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.
The new levies would be in addition to those already covering $50 billion in Chinese goods, thus raising the total value of targeted goods to about half of everything imported from China.
Hearings about the administration’s plan ended on Thursday as several tech companies weighed in with arguments against the tariffs. Their view: The taxes have so far raised costs for U.S. business and industry without producing any significant concessions from China.
Coalitions of business groups spent this week urging the White House to suspend further tariffs and instead renew efforts to negotiate reforms in China’s trade policies.
But President Donald Trump has signaled little interest in protracted discussions. He contends that China has been taking advantage of the U.S. for years, telling Bloomberg News last week that “it’s time to stop” the imbalance.
