President Donald Trump plans to announce two days from now that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will review fuel economy targets that would require new-car fleets to average more than 50 mpg by 2025, Reuters reports.
Sources tell the news service that Trump will reveal the widely expected decision at an event in the Detroit suburb of Ypsilanti, Mich., Reuters says top executives from General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Japanese and German carmakers will attend. The White House confirms Trump’s visit but not its purpose.
The president has been critical of EPA rulemaking and the agency’s conclusion in January just before he took office that the 2025 goal remains both feasible and reasonable. Carmakers agreed to the target in 2011 with the proviso that the goal be reviewed no later than April 2018.
