President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Elaine Chao to serve as his administration's secretary of transportation. Her selection must be confirmed by the Senate.

Chao, 63, served as secretary of labor in George W. Bush's administration between 2001 and 2008. She also was deputy secretary of transportation under Pres. George H.W. Bush.

If confirmed, Chao would play a role in Trump’s vow to rebuild America’s transportation infrastructure. She also would weigh in on Trump’s interest in easing automotive emission and fuel economy standards.

Chao, a Harvard Business School graduate, was a banker at Citibank and later CEO of the United Way of America. She also worked with the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
