Toyota Motor Corp. says it will introduce the redesigned 2016 model Prius hybrid sedan on Sept. 8 at a media event in Las Vegas.
The Prius, which debuted in Japan 18 years ago, has not been redesigned since 2009. Global demand for the car, which peaked at 509,400 units in 2010, totaled 207,400 last year, down 12% from 2013, according to WardsAuto.com.
Prius sales have sagged as fuel prices fell. But the car's dumpy styling hasn't helped, especially when compared with the considerably pricier but zoomier Tesla Model S electric sedan. Analysts note that a steady improvement in the fuel efficiency of conventionally powered small cars also has hurt Prius sales.
