Toyota Motor Corp. says it plans to recall 760,000 RAV4 compact crossover vehicles and 18,000 Lexus HS RX250h hybrid sedans in the U.S. to fix a problem that could cause arear suspension arm to break.
Toyota will recall another 100,000 vehicles in Canada, nearly all of them RAV4s. The campaign will involve RAV4 vehicles from the 2006 to early 2011 model years and 2010-model RX250h cars.
Toyota says improperly tightened lock nuts on a suspension arm could allow the arm's threads to rust and break. The company insists the problem is not a manufacturing defect but the result of improper work by mechanics when performing a rear-wheel alignment.
Toyota reports that it began receiving complaints in 2008 and is aware of nine crashes and three minor injuries linked to the problem. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the complaints in June.
The company says it will notify owners when it has developed a remedy.
