Toyota Motor Corp. hopes to balance its factory operations in Japan by offering a night-shift-only schedule that pays more than day-shift work, The Nikkei reports.

Historically, many Toyota factory employees worked swing shifts, working during the day one week and evenings the next week. The new plan aims to offset an increasingly popular option launched three years ago that allows women with young children to work only during the day.

The new volunteer program could begin on a trial basis in January, according to The Nikkei. The newspaper says Toyota would pay night-shift-only workers an unspecified “special allowance,” but allow them to work overnight only for three months because of health concerns.
