Toyota Motor Corp. plans to phase out Chinese production of its Prius hybrid sedan by year end and will import the next-generation model from Japan, according to The Nikkei, which cites no sources.

The company currently makes the Prius in Changchun through its venture with FAW Group. The plant has made the Prius for 10 years, but current demand is for only a few dozen vehicles per month, according to the newspaper.

Separately, Toyota is developing powertrain components in China for a locally produced hybrid variant of the Corolla small sedan.
