Toyota Motor Corp. says it will launch a four-member “venture company” in December to quickly develop all-electric vehicles.
The team will consist of one representative each from Aisin Seiki, Denso, Toyota Industries and Toyota Motor. The group will draw on the technical resources of the Toyota Group and is expected to apply unconventional work processes to shorten development time.
Toyota didn’t indicate a timeline for introducing all-electric models. But last week The Nikkei said the company has decided to begin offering EVs with ranges of more than 300 km (185 miles) by 2020.
Until now, Toyota has favored hybrids, and it considers fuel cell vehicles as the “ultimate eco-car.” But the company concedes that variations in energy and infrastructure demand a battery-powered powertrain option too, especially where new regulations are pushing carmakers to add zero-emission vehicles quickly.
CEO Akio Toyoda says he hopes the ultra-lean task force will introduce innovative work practices that can be applied throughout the company.
