Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 39,900 of its Prius plug-in hybrid vehicles in the U.S. to replace a fuse that could break and either reduce power or shut down the powertrain entirely.

The problem affects 2012-2015 plug-ins but not standard hybrid models. Toyota says the fuse is most likely to break under high-load driving conditions, such as climbing a long hill. The company also notes that the other Toyota and Lexus brand hybrid vehicles it sells in the U.S. use a different type of fuse.

The U.S. recall is expected to begin in early January. But Toyota may launch a broader campaign because the flaw also has been reported in Europe and Japan.
