Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling about 193,000 hybrids worldwide to repair an electrical problem that could cause the vehicles to unexpectedly stop operating.
In the U.S., the campaign includes 141,000 midsize hybrid crossover vehicles: Lexus RX400hs from the model years 2006-2008 and 2006-2010-model Toyota Highlanders. The action also involves 15,000 Harrier and Kluger crossovers in Japan.
The company will replace a module in hybrid's inverter, the system that converts DC battery power to AC for the electric drive system.
Toyota also announced a second recall affecting about 165,000 large cars, including 106,000 Lexus GS350 and IS350 sedans in the U.S. Toyota says the engines in affected cars could stop running suddenly if the bolts that attach the variable valve timing control system loosen.
