Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling about 193,000 hybrids worldwide to repair an electrical problem that could cause the vehicles to suddenly stop operating.
The company also announced a second campaign involving about 165,000 large sedans, including 106,000 Lexus GS350s and IS350s in the U.S. Toyota says the engines in affected cars could stop running unexpectedly when bolts that attach the variable valve timing control system loosen.
The hybrid recall affects Lexus RX400h SUVs made between March 2005 and June 2011, and Highlander SUVs manufactured between February 2005 and May 2007. The campaign includes about 141,000 hybrids in the U.S. and 15,000 Harrier and Kluger hybrids in Japan.
Toyota says transistors within the hybrid system's inverter can overheat, triggering a warning and causing the SUV to enter "limp-home mode" or stop completely. Toyota will replace a module inside the inverter, a device used to convert DC battery power to AC power for use in the electric drive system.
