Toyota Motor Corp. is calling back more than 1.4 million cars worldwide that are equipped with faulty sie curtain airbag inflators made by Autoliv Inc. that could cause the airbags to misfire and propel the inflator itself into the passenger compartment.
The recall targets 2010-2012 model Toyota Prius sedans and Lexus CT200h luxury five-door hatches. Both models are hybrids. About 482,000 of the affected cars are in the U.S.
The Toyota campaign will replace Autoliv inflators that have a small crack in a weld, according to the carmaker. The flaw could cause the inflator to misfire when trigged in a crash. The carmaker reports no injuries or deaths caused by the defect. Autoliv reports seven cases where Prius side airbags deployed spontaneously when the vehicle was parked and unoccupied.
About 932,000 of the Prius models are involved in a separate recall to replace emission control canisters that could leak fuel. That recall also will replace canisters in about 1.9 million Toyota Corolla small cars worldwide.
