Toyota Motor Corp. says American sales of its four-model Prius hybrid lineup are likely to exceed its target of 220,000 units this year.
U.S. sales chief Bob Carter tells Bloomberg News that steep gasoline prices are creating stronger demand for the Prius than Toyota anticipated.
The company sold 86,000 of the cars in the U.S. from January through April, up 56% from a year earlier, when the original hatchback was the only version available. The Prius "v" wagon debuted in the U.S. last October, followed by the extended-range hybrid in February and "c" subcompact in March.
In Japan, the company sold 215,500 Prius cars in the first four months of 2012 compared with 57,400 units a year earlier.
