Toyota Motor Corp.’s new C-HR subcompact crossover vehicle is the first SUV in at least 10 years to become Japan’s best-selling model.
The sporty car (left), which shares its platform with the Prius hybrid sedan, attracted 13,200 buyers in April, according to trade group data. Toyota aims to sell the model in more than 100 countries.
Japan’s second-most-popular model was Honda Motor Co.’s N-Box minicar, whose deliveries came to 12,300 units. Toyota affiliate Daihatsu Motor Co.’s Move minicar came in third with sales of 12,000 units. Demand for last year’s best-seller, the Toyota Prius, plunged more than 50% to 9,900 units last month, relegating it to fifth place.
Half the Japanese market’s top-10 sellers are minicars, which are powered by engines with a displacement no more than 660 cc. The cars are popular because of their lower tax rate and higher fuel efficiency.
