Vera Automotive, Thailand’s first domestic electric-car company, debuted its inaugural EV, the Vera V1 last weekend.
The Bankok-based startup targets sales of only 100 units this year Skeptics say the car faces a steep marketing curve in Thailand, where EVs are virtually nonexistent. Company co-founder Werachet Khan-ngern tells the Bangkok Post that Vera hopes for a government policy and EV support strategy to help develop an EV market in the country.
The V1 was engineered by the 15-month-old company but is being produced by China’s Geely Automotive in China. As an import, the 1 million-baht ($28,300) car will be saddled with an 80% import duty, 10% excise tax, 10% interior tax and 7% value-added tax.
The four-seat mini-hatch is come equipped with a 15/30 kW induction motor and a 22-kWh battery that can propel the car to a top speed of 105 kph (65 mph) and a distance of about 180 km (112 miles) per charge. Vera says the V1 can be charged in six hours via a 220-volt connection.
