Tesla Inc. has been granted a waiver from paying a 10% import duty on aluminum from Japan, Reuters reports.

Tesla asked in April for relief from the tax metal required to make battery cells for its electric cars. Reuters says the one-year waiver covers 10,000 metric tons of special grades and thicknesses of aluminum supplied by Nippon Light Metal Co.
The Commerce Dept. says the waiver is justifiable because the material required can’t be supplied by U.S. producers in sufficient quantity and quality.
