Tesla Inc. has prevailed in its effort to reverse an Ontario ruling that excluded the electric carmaker’s customers from qualifying for government rebates, Reuters reports.
The policy change came in July when Ontario’s Progressive Conservative party took control of the province’s government and canceled a program that provided EV buyers with rebates worth as much as C$14,000 ($10,700).
The program was phased out in such a way as to cover EV buyers who had already ordered their cars through dealers but not yet taken delivery. Tesla complained that the process discriminated against its customers, because they receive their vehicles directly from the factory.
Tesla called the policy “arbitrary.” Ontario Judge Frederick Myers agreed, ruling that Ontario’s transportation minister targeted Tesla and gave the company no chance to be heard.
