Tesla Inc. is readying a high-powered version of its Model 3 electric sedan that can sprint to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.
The unnamed $78,000 model will be equipped with two motors, all-wheel-drive and a 310-mile range. Musk claims the performance car will be able to “beat anything in its class on the track.”
Musk also says Tesla will begin in July to offer Model 3 buyers a $5,000 option that consists of dual motors and a battery with 310-mile range, but with slightly slower acceleration and lower top speed.
Tesla has touted the Model 3 as a $35,000 car. But so far the company has produced only $44,000 versions with longer-range batteries, a quick-charge system and other extras. The company, which is keen to generate cash, isn’t expected to get around to making entry-level versions of the Model 3 until at least late next year.
