Tesla Motors Inc. says it will offer customers in China special converter devices that enable them to plug their electric cars into China’s incompatible state-operated charging stations.
Currently Tesla drivers in the country must charge their vehicles at the company’s own Supercharger fast-charge facilities or with slower-speed connections they install at home. Tesla’s China manager tells reporters at the Guangzhou auto show that the converters will address a fundamental concern among would-be buyers about being stranded when the car’s battery runs out of power.
Tesla said previously it will make its charger connectors and in-vehicle system compatible with China’s system when the government sets a standard design.
