Tesla Motors Inc. says it will develop an electric car that can drive itself, at least under most conditions, by 2016.

CEO Elon Musk says the vehicle, to be developed in-house by the California-based EV company, will be capable of handing over more than 90% of driving control to onboard computers. He adds that it will take longer to come up with a fully autonomous vehicle.

Musk's timeframe aligns with predictions made recently by Daimler AG and Nissan Motor Co., which have estimated the full autonomy will come by 2020. Less optimistic carmakers and analysts say fully self-driving cars are 10-15 years away.
