Tesla Motors Inc. reiterates plans to begin delivering its upcoming Model 3 electric sedan late next year. But it says those just making a reservation for the car now aren’t likely to get one until at least the middle of 2018.
Tesla reports it has collected about 373,000 refundable deposits from would-be buyers of the $35,000 car. The volume prompted CEO Elon Musk to announce in May that the company now aims to reach an annual production goal of 500,000 vehicles in 2018, two years sooner than originally planned.
Last year Tesla’s sole factory in Fremont, Calif., assembled about 50,000 of the company’s $71,500 Model S sedans and $83,000 Model X crossover vehicles. The same facility also will add the Model 3.
