Tesla Motors Inc. hiked quarterly deliveries of its Model S electric sedans to a record 11,500 units in April-June. Volume was up 52% from the second quarter of 2014.

The company sold 33,000 cars in 2014. It expects to sell about 55,000 units in 2015, aided by the launch of its Model X crossover later this year. The new model will share is platform with the $76,000 Model S and is expected to be similarly priced.

CEO Elon Musk has said he hopes to unveil a prototype of Tesla's $35,000 Model 3 electric sedan next spring and begin sales of that model in early 2017.
