California-based electric carmaker Tesla Motors Inc. has named Jochen Rudat, formerly head of its operations in Switzerland, to run the company's EV business in Austria and Germany, effective in October.

Rudat will succeed Philipp Schroeder, who is leaving Tesla to return to his former employer, home and business backup battery maker Sonnenbatterie GmbH, as head of sales and marketing.

Tesla aims to achieve monthly sales in Germany of 1,000 EVs. But demand there for the company's Model S electric sedan through the first six months of this year was only slightly above 800, according to the country's KBA transport authority.

Automotive News points out that Tesla is doing well in European countries that offer big sales incentives to EV buyers. But like other makers of electric cars, it has struggled in Germany, which has been reluctant to subsidize such sales.
