Tesla Motors Inc. delivered an any-quarter record 24,500 electric cars in July-September, up 70% from the previous three-month period.
The company reiterates it will hit its target of selling at least 50,000 vehicles in the second half of 2016, aided by sales of its recently introduced Model X electric crossover.
Tesla has said it aims to multiply its annual output to 500,000 EVs by 2018. Reaching that goal will require a smooth and timely launch for the $35,000 Model 3 electric sedan due late next year. The plans also will need enough output from the “gigafactory” battery plant Tesla is constructing outside Reno, Nev. The facility reportedly began pilot production in July.
