Tesla Inc. says it will now present its all-electric highway truck tractor concept on Nov. 16 instead of the previously scheduled Oct. 26. The company originally aimed to unveil the truck in September.
CEO Elon Musk blames the new delay primarily on the need to resolve production bottlenecks for its Model 3 electric sedan, which he describes as “production hell.” Tesla made fewer than 300 of the cars in the third quarter, one-fifth its targeted output.
Musk says the company also is trying to rush production of batteries that can be used for stationary power sources in regions damaged by hurricanes and other disasters.
Musk has been approached by the governor of hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico about employing Tesla batteries to fill in for the island’s decimated electric infrastructure. Most of the population is still without power following Hurricane Maria two weeks ago.
Tesla’s Powerwall battery systems can be recharged with solar panels. Tesla is among several companies that are shipping such systems to the stricken U.S. commonwealth.
