Tesla Inc.’s Model S electric sedan outsold flagship BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class models in Europe last year, says JATO Dynamics.
The Model S has been able to do that in the U.S. for some time. But outselling BMW and Mercedes in their local markets is an alarm that “a smaller but smarter brand can beat them at home,” analyst Felipe Munoz, tells Automotive News Europe.
JATO calculates that Tesla’s Model S sales rose 30% to 16,200 units in Europe last year. That compares with a 3% gain to 13,400 units for Mercedes S-Class cars and a 13% drop to 11,700 units for BMW’s 7 Series models..
Tesla’s Model X electric SUV/crossover also is selling well in Europe. Last year, European demand for the model reached 12,000 units, outselling BMW’s X6 and almost matching the Porsche Cayenne, JATO says.
ANE points out that European carmakers are responding with a bevy of upcoming electrics. Porsche will introduce its Mission E electric sedan later this year. Audi and Jaguar plan to launch electric crossovers—the e-tron Quattro and I-Pace, respectively—within the next six months.

The notion that electric vehicles were the sort of thing that well-meaning professors who wear tweed jackets with elbow patches drove in order to help save the environment was pretty much annihilated when Tesla added the Ludicrous+ mode to the Model S which propelled the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds.
