Tesla Motors Inc. sold 22,300 of its $71,000 Model S electric sedans worldwide in 2013, including about 6,900 units in the fourth quarter.

Output at the company's factory in Fremont, Calif., is running at more than 600 cars per week. The company expects to double global sales this year as it adds 41 service facilities to the 66 it operates worldwide today.

Tesla disappointed reporters at the Detroit auto show by not showing a prototype of the Mode X crossover vehicle it is developing. But global sales and service chief Jerome Guillen says the new model is on schedule to go into production in California by year-end.

Guillen offered no details about the timing or performance goals of Tesla's next electric car, a less opulently appointed sedan expected to be offered at half the price of the Model S.
