Tesla Drops “Autopilot” Reference from Website in China

Tesla Motors Inc. has removed reference to its Autopilot driver aid system after an owner suffered a minor crash while using the feature, Reuters reports.
The driver claimed Tesla overstated the capabilities of the system, which can automatically steer, brake and accelerate the vehicle under certain circumstances. Tesla tells the news service the timing of the website update is coincidental.
Tesla had described the system with the Chinese phrase “zidong jiashi,” which means “autopilot.” But the term translates literally as “self-driving.” Tesla now uses a phrase to describe the system as providing “self-assisted driving.”
The company continues to advise all customers, including those in China, that they must maintain full control of their vehicles at all times regardless of whether they are using the Autopilot feature. Attention has focused on the system since a Tesla driver died in Florida last month in a crash that occurred while his car was in Autopilot mode.
