Tesla Motors Inc. tells Autocar it might develop a new sports coupe as a "halo" model for its expanding electric vehicle lineup.
But the company says such a car would not debut for about five years. Tesla is expected to follow the Model S large electric sedan it introduced earlier this year with the Model X crossover in late 2013 and a smaller sedan in about 2015.
George Blankenship, Tesla's sales chief, tells the British magazine that the arrival of the small sedan also will mark the debut of a new platform intended to carry all future models.
Tesla is phasing out its $109,000 Roadster, an electrified version of the Lotus Elise introduced by the California company in 2008. Blankenship says a new Roadster, if developed at all, would come only after Tesla establishes the more mainstream models.
