Tesla Inc. expects to begin building its Model Y small electric crossover vehicle in November 2019, sources tell Reuters.
The news service cites suppliers who have been asked to submit preliminary bids on the new model. The car will be a variant of the Model 3 sedan Tesla introduced eight months ago.
Suppliers say the carmaker isn’t providing details about the Model Y program except that production will commence 19 months from now at the company’s assembly plant in Fremont, Calif.
The news comes as Tesla struggles to achieve initial production targets for the Model 3. The company also missed launch dates and early production timetables for the two other models it currently builds: the Model S luxury sedan, which debuted in mid-2012, and Model X crossover vehicle introduced four years later.
