TDK Corp., the Japanese maker of magnets, sensors and electronics, is the latest company to jump into the fledgling market for wireless charging systems for electric vehicles.
The company hopes to ship about 50,000 of its chargers in 2020. TDK’s system combines the company’s own technologies with those developed by Massachusetts-based wireless tech developer WiTricity Corp. TDK agreed in 2014 to license WiTricity’s technology.
Several other carmakers and suppliers have been promoting their own wireless chargers. The systems use a floor-mounted induction coil to generate current in a receiving coil built into the undercarriage of an EV.
Developers believe the superior convenience of wireless charging eventually will prevail over plug-in chargers. But a lack of standards has made it difficult for such systems to gain traction.
