Tata Motors Ltd. has been ordered by India’s top court to return 1,000 acres of land acquired in Singur, West Bengal, eight years ago on which to build a factory to make its ultra-low-cost Nano car.
The company abandoned the nearly completed plant on the site in 2008 after violent protests by displaced farmers. The state of West Bengal passed a law ordering Tata to return the land, but it was rejected as unconstitutional in 2011 by a court in Calcutta. The issue has been mired in legal debate since then.
Tata lost 14 billion rupees ($209 million) when it wrote off the factory and relocated operations cross country to a $380 million facility in Sanand in 2010.
