Two new fatalities in Malaysia have been linked to misfiring airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp., Honda Motor Co. reports.
The crashes, which occurred within the past three weeks, involved driver-side frontal airbags whose inflators exploded, spraying shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Both cars had been recalled to replace their inflators, according to the carmaker.
The Malaysian fatalities bring the Takata airbag inflator death toll to 13. Three have occurred in Malaysia and 10 in the U.S. All but one incident involved a Honda vehicle.
A dozen carmakers are recalling roughly 60 million Takata inflators worldwide. On Wednesday the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration added at least 30 million more devices in the U.S. to the list.
