Suzuki Motor Corp.'s 2014 Alto minicar, which boasts a Japanese fuel economy rating of 33 km/liter (77.6 mpg), is the world's most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered car, The Nikkei reports.

The 710-kg (1,600-lb) four-door reportedly will be powered by the current model's 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine that makes 68 hp and 66 lb-ft of torque. The 2014 model will be equipped with regenerative braking and a system that shuts off the front-wheel-drive engine when vehicle speed drops below 13 kph (8 mph).

The Nikkei says Suzuki reduced the Alto's weight by 20 kg (44 lb) by using high-strength steel.

The Alto will go on sale in Japan next month with a starting price of about $9,600. A variant of the four-seater is sold in other markets as the Suzuki A-Star or Suzuki Celerio.
