European demand for SUVs and crossover vehicles jumped 22% to 3.8 million units in 2016, capturing a record 25% of the region's passenger vehicle market.
Citing data from JATO Dynamics, Automotive News Europe notes SUV sales were driven by dramatic increases in demand for premium models in compact (+40%), midsize (+30%) and large (+22%) sizes. But sales of non-premium large SUVs fell 12%.
As in the U.S., the shift to SUV/crossovers is hurting sales of conventional cars. Deliveries of every segment of those models trailed the market’s overall 7% growth last year, according to JATO. The data provider notes that minivan sales slumped more than 7% in 2016.
Compact and small SUVs accounted for 12% and 8%, respectively, of Europe’s passenger vehicle market last year. Midsize and large models collectively captured 5% of all sales.
