Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. plans to return to the electric vehicle with an EV needed to meet California standards that will demand 16% zero-emission vehicles from each carmaker by 2018.
President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga tells The Nikkei the company's Subaru unit will have a working plan in place for the program by the end of 2014.
FHI marketed an electrified version of its Stella minivehicle in 2009. But it abandoned the model because of poor demand for EVs and a company decision to stop making minivehicles.
Yoshinaga also says Subaru will strengthen its partnership with Toyota Motor Corp., its 16.5% owner, to add other "green" vehicles to its lineup. Last autumn the companies said they would co-develop a hybrid SUV for each brand by 2017.
