Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.’s Subaru unit is developing an all-electric crossover vehicle and expects to launch it in the U.S. by 2021, sources tell the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun. The company says it has made no decision on an EV.
The midsize all-wheel-drive vehicle will be based on the company’s Forester crossover or Outback wagon, according to the Japanese newspaper. The car will ride on the new Subaru Global Platform unveiled in March.
The chassis, which is designed to carry almost all the brand’s future models, can accommodate piston-powered, hybrid and all-electric powertrains. The platform debuted this summer in the redesigned Impreza sedan and five-door hatch.
The new architecture also will underpin next-generation versions of the Forester and Outback. And it will carry the three-row Crosstrek crossover that will replace the Tribeca in 2018.
