Subaru Corp. says it will launch its first electric vehicle by 2021, confirming media reports from last year.
The new EV will be based on an existing vehicle rather than an all-new standalone model, CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga tells Bloomberg News. He didn’t provide any other details, but previous reports suggested the EV will be a midsize crossover vehicle based on either the Forester SUV or Outback wagon.
Yoshinaga says the company is evaluating potential partners for the EV project, including Panasonic Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. A decision is expected to be made in about a year.
Subaru also is developing a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that is expected to be introduced as early as next year. The upcoming Crosstrek crossover vehicle is a likely candidate for the plug-in architecture, Bloomberg notes.
