Trade negotiators made little apparent headway today in their latest meeting about how to include Canada in a tentative deal between the U.S. and Mexico to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s foreign affairs minister, describes today’s talks as “productive, constructive” and with “goodwill on both sides.” But negotiators had no specific result to indicate progress.

President Donald Trump aims to fast-track a deal with Mexico by year-end, whether Canada joins or not. But Congressional leaders are warning that they cannot proceed under fast-track rules unless the new pact includes all three countries.
