Volkswagen AG’s Skoda unit is updating its flagship Superb sedan with an exterior facelift, new interior display and hybrid powertrain option.

The carmaker released a darkened sketch of the vehicle this week ahead of its public unveiling late this month.

Styling changes include a new front fascia, tweaked headlights and reworked lower bumper. Skoda’s sporty grille treatment is retained. Following the lead of the all-new Scala hatchback, the 2020 Superb will replace the brand’s emblem with the Skoda name across its trunk.

The Superb also will mirror Scala’s interior with a new central display screen, smartphone integration and the capability for over-the-air software updates. Skoda says the cabin also will be roomier, have more amenities and be more practical than the outgoing model.

The hybrid variant is expected to team an electric motor with a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. In the midsize Volkswagen Passat GTE, the combination generates 215 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That vehicle emits 39 g/km of carbon dioxide and can travel 30 miles on electric-only power.

Skoda reintroduced the Superb nameplate in 2001 after a 50-year hiatus. The original Superb debuted in 1934.
