Shiloh Industries Inc. has unveiled a laser-welded aluminum door blank that is about 25% lighter than a traditionally produced single-piece aluminum panel.

The new panels are the latest and lightest in Shiloh's line of BlankLight products. The company credits much of the weight savings to its proprietary laser welding process.

Shiloh says four of its new door blanks weigh 26.8 lb compared with 35.5 lbs for standard aluminum construction and nearly 58 lbs for steel panels.

The Canton, Mich.-based company, which specializes in lightweighting and noise control solutions, works with steel, aluminum and magnesium blanks, stampings, modular assemblies, machined components and die castings.
