Shanghai says its citizens who buy a Tesla Model S electric sedan in won't have to pay the normal $12,000 to obtain a license plate for their car.
About 400 Tesla customers have received the free plates to date, Bloomberg News reports. Shanghai launched the giveaway to support sales of "new energy" vehicles.
Tesla began selling cars in China in April. The company says its cars, which retail for $75,000 in the U.S., cost about $46,000 more in China because of shipping and local fees.
The company expects to open 100 service centers in the country by the end of next year. It has predicted that China may become its biggest national market by the end of 2015.
Bloomberg reports separately that China's National Development and Reform Commission expects to complete a new policy by year-end that will allow local EV production by companies other than traditional carmakers.
