The all-new flagship electric vehicle BMW AG plans to launch in 2021 under its “i” sub-brand will be a crossover/SUV, Autocar reports.
The U.K.-based enthusiast magazine, which doesn’t cite its sources, notes that a crossover will accommodate a large battery pack to help boost driving range. Previous reports suggested the so-called iNext program would be a sedan based on the Vision Next concept BMW unveiled in March at the Geneva auto show.
BMW hasn’t provided any details other than to say the unidentified model will team a variety of automated driver-assist features with a more efficient electric powertrain, digital connectivity, a redesigned interior and a lightweight architecture. The 2021 timing will allow BMW to take advantage of “the next big steps in electric motor, battery and autonomy,” according to company officials.
BMW launched the i-brand in 2013 with the i3 electric car and i8 plug-in hybrid coupe. A roadster version of the i8 is due to bow in 2018. About 80% of “i” buyers are new to BMW, according to the carmaker.
