Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit is adding a plug-in hybrid variant of its new Tarraco SUV/crossover vehicle.

The European model, which will be publicly unveiled at next month’s Frankfurt auto show, is due to hit the streets in the first half of 2020.

Power will come from an electric motor paired with a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The combination produces 242 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, which will make the hybrid SUV the most powerful variant of the Tarraco. Top speed is listed at 135 mph.

A 13-kWh lithium-ion battery will provide an all-electric range of more than 50 km (31 miles), according to the carmaker. SEAT claims the hybrid SUV will generate fewer than 50 g/km of carbon dioxide emissions.

The conventionally powered Tarraco debuted earlier this year as SEAT’s new flagship model. In addition to the plug-in hybrid variant, SEAT is adding a high-end Tarraco “FR” trim line that will include unique styling, an upgraded interior and other goodies.
